California Legislature Releases Sweeping Bill Package to Fast Track Housing Production

Assembly Bill 557 (AB 557), sponsored by Model/Z and SoLa Impact, has unanimously passed the California Assembly's Housing and Community Development Committee with an 8-0 vote. This legislation is designed to significantly expedite, simplify, and streamline the production and permitting processes for modular housing, including Model/Z modular units.

During a recent visit, Assemblymembers Buffy Wicks and Tina McKinnor saw firsthand the potential of modular construction through Model/Z. Both leaders recognized the value and have voiced strong support, with Wicks calling modular "the future" of housing.

AB 557 proposes an innovative "HOV Lane" approach for modular housing projects, reducing inspections, enhancing modular interchangeability, and dramatically accelerating construction timelines. This bill is a key element in California's broader strategy to fast-track housing production, directly addressing the urgent need for affordable and workforce housing solutions.

We are proud of our team's role in driving this critical legislative progress and remain committed to advancing modular innovation that benefits communities statewide.

Stay tuned as AB 557 progresses through the California legislature.
